Debuting in the 1970 International Championships for Makes, the Ferrari 512M is the modified version of the Ferrari 512S. The M stands for modificata. Modeled after its main competitor, the Porsche 917, the 512M has a 5 litre V12 engine. Enzo Ferrari matched the investment Porsche made in its race cars the year prior, with the thought that surplus vehicles would be sold to racing customers. Unfortunately, he was unable to sell the surplus stock of sports cars with each requiring two drivers.
Five years later, Ferrari began producing the Ferrari 512 BB, which is the Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer using the 5 litre V12 engine. From 1976 to 1981, 929 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxers were produced. The 512 BB was succeeded with the fuel injected version, the Ferrari 512 BBI, in 1981.
