The Ferrari F40 was unveiled in July of 1987 as a mid-engined rear wheel drive sports car. Designed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Ferrari, the F40 was the final model personally approved by Enzo Ferrari. Manufactured from 1987 to 1992, the Ferrari F40 was the fastest, most powerful, and most expensive sports car of its time.
Featuring a larger version of the 288 GTO twin turbocharged V8 engine, the Ferrari F40 had a top speed of 199 mph and could accelerate to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. As with any racing car, weight was scrutinized heavily. Therefore much of the body and interior was constructed of aluminum, Kevlar, and other carbon fiber parts.
The Ferrari F40 was originally slated for a limited production run of 400 units. A total of 1,315 total units were produced, with only 213 sent to the United States.
